SUMMARIES OF SYMPOSIA & MEETINGS

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) held the XI International IUPAC Symposium on Mycotoxins and Phycotoxins in Bethesda, Maryland, May 17–21, 2004. The meeting offered an interdisciplinary perspective on the evolving approach to food safety in the global marketplace as well as an analysis of the progress achieved in mycotoxin research, testing, and management since the Brazil 2000 symposium. An international panel of scientists shared their insights on the latest methodologies; the value of assessment, laboratory quality assurance, quality control, and accreditation; and the issues surrounding method validation, particularly in developing countries. Advances in genomic testing methods and control strategies, as well as the impact ofmycotoxins and phycotoxins on animal and human health, were evaluated in depth.
