REGULATORY NEWS

A new publication,“Worldwide Regulations for Mycotoxins in Food and Feed in 2003,”FAO Food and Nutrition Paper No.81 (2004), 180 pages, is now available. This update of FAO Food and Nutrition Paper No.64 (1977) describes the state of worldwide mycotoxin regulations as of December 2003, based on an international inquiry carried out in 2002/2003. Since the discovery of aflatoxins in the 1960s, mycotoxin regulations have been established in many countries, both to protect the consumer from the harmful effects of ingesting foodstuffs contaminated with these toxins and to ensure fair trade practices in the food industry. The number of countries with specific regulations for mycotoxins has greatly increased over the years, reflecting international concern about the potential effects ofmycotoxins on human and animal health as well as with their implications for trade.
