AnOverview on Toxigenic Fungi and Mycotoxins in Europe (Hardcover, 259 pages), edited by A.Logrieco and A.Visconti, 2004, and published by Kluwer Academic Publishers (ISBN 1- 4020-2645-5) summarizes the closing meeting of COST-835 held October 24–25, 2003, in Martina Franca, Italy. The book features contributions of experts from 18 European countries (Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany,Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia-Montenegro, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom). It provides a detailed overview of the occurrence of toxigenic fungi such as Fusarium, Aspergillus, and Penicillium and their byproducts–trichothecenes, zearalenone, fumonisins, ochratoxins, aflatoxins, and other mycotoxin–in plants, foods, and feeds.

As global trade has transported the plant products of various regions to new habitats, the spread ofmycotoxins has become a major concern. The differences in environmental conditions (temperature, light, rainfall, etc.) and in exposed cultivated plants (type of cereals, cultivars, etc.) in various European countries have significantly influenced the distribution of specific toxigenic fungi and relative mycotoxicological problems. Researchers and officials concerned with these problems will find that the comprehensive information in this volume provides a solid foundation for the continued development of regulatory policies based on risk management.
