The threat of mycotoxins to the world’s food supply was
one of the major food safety issues discussed by European
and South African participants in a May 22 and 23, 2006,
workshop in Pretoria, South Africa. The South African
Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)
organized the forum in concert with the Sixth Framework
Project Safe Foods Consortium as an opportunity for food
safety experts to network and exchange information on
current and upcoming projects. The first part of the event
featured presentations on emerging food safety risks.
The opening program also included Dr.Antonio Giulio’s
overview of the structure and objectives of the upcoming
EU Seventh Framework Program and an update on South
Africa’s leadership role in various EU research ventures.
Day two of the workshop was devoted to exploring
possibilities for future collaborative projects.
