SUMMARIES OF SYMPOSIA AND CONFERENCES

Mycotoxins 2009, a one-day conference on March 10, 2009, in Bangkok, Thailand, presented a comprehensive overview of the risks of mycotoxin contamination to human and animal health. The conference’s panel of scientific and agribusiness experts addressed the key concerns of growers, storage facility operators, processors, nutritionists, legislators, and other major stakeholders in the pig, poultry, and dairy industries.

The conference opened with an introduction to the complex topic of mycotoxins and animal health by Dr. Trevor Smith, a leading Canadian researcher on the role of Fusarium mycotoxins in livestock diseases and impaired productivity. Talks
on the value of surveys in mycotoxin risk management, advances in mycotoxin testing, the potential of nanotechnology for mycotoxin control, and the vulnerability of various feed ingredients to mycotoxin contamination rounded out the morning program.

During the afternoon sessions, Dr. Douglas Zaviezo discussed the Brazilian government’s groundbreaking development of scientific regulations for anti-mycotoxin feed additives. Four leading providers of mycotoxin control products concluded the program with sessions on reducing consumer and livestock mycotoxin exposure and the future of mycotoxin management.
