SUMMARIES OF SYMPOSIA AND CONFERENCES

The 2009 Recent Advances in Food Analysis (RAFA) symposium met this year in the Czech Republic. The international audience that gathered in Prague for the November 4–6 sessions included representatives from government and industry labs as well as regulatory agencies and agribusiness and technology companies. The sessions addressed a broad cross-section of the latest rapid test methods, including an update on LC-MS analysis of mycotoxins. Food safety legislation, European research perspectives, and emerging food safety issues were also discussed. The conference was preceded by a satellite workshop and a vendor symposium — Most Advanced Comprehensive GCxGC Solutions Utilizing TOF MS —on November 3. The workshop featured the latest developments from the TRACE project, a European Commission study on multi-isotopic and multi-element systems for tracking food to verify its country of origin.
